Folded Steel Swords
Many years before mechanical devices were discovered that would help in making swords, metal smiths and iron smiths used various techniques that would help to create a strong sword. A durable sword was one of the most important items that a soldier could have in battle. Unfortunately not much was known about combining metals together to form a hard metal which is the standard practice today. In order to make a strong sword, a process called folded steel, or watermark Damascus steel was invented.
In the process of building folded steel swords, a craftsman would melt various pieces of metal and layer them on top of each other. As many as 100 pieces of metal were folded together to create a strong sword. Not only did it help to make a durable sword, but layering and folding the steel together allowed the craftsman to control the look of the steel. Patterns and lines can be seen and manipulated when using this technique which made a truly unique, one of a kind sword. Today we have made many advances in technology that allow us to mix metals to create a strong metal, but there's just something about the older technique of building folded steel swords.
