Rapier Swords
When one thinks of gallant sword fights and duels, rapier swords are what would have been used. Rapiers were found in Europe mostly during the 16th and 17th centuries. Rapiers are characterized by having a long, slim blade that has a sharp point. It had a double-edged blade and would have been used with one hand and was the type of weapon that would have been used for both offensive and defensive combats. These swords were not used for cutting, but instead for thrusting and stabbing. With its long blade and lighter weight, it was fashionable for many wealthy European men to become trained at the rapier for use in civilian combat if one ever found themselves having to defend a beautiful maiden.
The hilt of the rapier sword was quite complex and made of metal so as to protect the hand and knuckles from a dueling opponent. Originally, it was only rings that extended from the crosspiece, but it still provided enough room for a skilled swordsman to thrust and cut the hand. Eventually, an entire cup was built to protect the hand entirely. At the end of the handle, there was often a heavy pommel to balance the weight of the blade.
