Damascus Swords
Damascus swords were made by Middle Eastern sword makers from 1100 to 1700 AD. They were called Damascus swords because Damascus steel was used to forge them. This steel has visible grain which sometimes forms a pattern and has texture. Even though there is much debate about how the swords were built, it seems that the alloy used was both strong and flexible.
It is wondered that the hard carbides were layered with the more flexible iron. The patterns are actually caused by carbon elements that form swirls in the steel mix and when polished and grinded, the pattern becomes visible. The Damascus sword is often thought to have magical properties as it was sharp and delicate enough to cut a piece of silk if it fell over the blade, but was strong enough to cut though rocks without becoming dull. The sword was often one piece of metal with one end made into a blade and the other made into a loop for a handle.
The technique is up for debate on how Damascus swords were built and it took great effort to reproduce both the strength and aesthetic qualities of Damascus swords. Today, reproductions are usually similar in appearance, but the internal structure is different than the originals.
