Officers Swords
Ever since the American Revolutionary War was fought in the 1800's, U.S. Marine Officers have carried swords, as have non-commissioned officers or NCOs. Today, for ceremonial reasons Marine Officers carry what's called a Mareluke sword. This sword is a curved, cross hilted sword which was used by Mamluk soldiers in the middle-east several centuries ago. It is usually carried in a scabbard and has a hand grip for protecting the hands from the opponent.
In terms of size, a sword carried by an American Cavalry officer for example is about 40 inches long, 1.25 inches wide and weighs about 2 pounds. The custom of carrying a sword started when First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon was given a sword by the Prince of the Ottoman Empire in 1804 as a gift for returning him to his throne. The officer's sword was officially adopted in 1825. One notable sword is the Model 1850 Army Foot Officer's sword which was used until World War II.
In the British Army, Mameluke swords were also carried by its officers and Royal Navy Officers, Rifle Officers, Artillery Officers and Air force Officers all carried swords. Many of these swords still exist today and can be purchased through online auctions, or replicas can also be commissioned, made to the exact specifications.
