Several rumors gained increasing momentum during construction until the technology show E3 to early June. Perhaps the most persistent rumor is that of a cut prices of PlayStation 3 and a new PSP handheld gaming device. Reducing the price of the PS3 did not happen, despite the new PSP does not. We take a look at the Sony's big E3 announcements.
Perhaps the biggest announcement was the first. Sony introduced a new portable PSP console PSP called Go. The main feature the device is a mobile screen slides open to enjoy the controls that appear to be much better than the previous generation with more PS3 PSP presentation, including the introduction of an analog stick. This screen lets slip new device to a claimed 50% smaller and about 40% lighter than the original PSP. In what could be considered an admission of defeat, the UMD (Universal Media Disc) drive has been suspended, a move that will certainly see the disappearance of this little dear proprietary format. In its place is a Memory Stick slot (using the M2 format), along with 16 GB of internal memory. Built in Wi-Fi and technologies Bluetooth communication also matter. The PSP Go will hit stores in October 2009 for $ 249.99.
The second big announcement from Sony was a driver movement to the PS3 games console. The control system works in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye webcam motion detection that tracks player movement in the room. The demo shows the player replicated on the screen, usually with some sort of weapon to be held in her hand like a light saber or a sword. The technology is clearly a play on the Nintendo Wii control system and the movement is to take the original Wii Remote, a step further by using whole body movement. Interestingly, Microsoft launched a similar system at E3, although I must say that the Sony system seemed much closer to making the production system from Microsoft.
These represented the two major announcements at the show. Other news surrounded by new and upcoming games. Some notable highlights were a live demonstration of execution of Uncharted 2, a live demonstration of the war game MAG showing a staggering 256 network operators in real-time playing live over the Internet. Some new Games are also announced as a PS3 exclusive Rockstar (creators of GTA4) called Agent and based on the 1970s. A new game on the block called Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker also announced, along with a small trailer to accompany it. The game is scheduled for 2010.
This concludes our brief look at ad Sony at E3 2009.
